An antibiotic, Tetracycline is used to treat a range of bacterial infections including acne, gonorrhoea, Chlamydia, and urine infections. It works by interrupting the production of the proteins required by the bacteria, and thereby the growth of the bacteria, which then allows the body’s own immune system to eliminate them.
It is recommended that Tetracycline is taken orally, once a day, on an empty stomach. Follow your doctor’s advise at all times and read the enclosed dosing instructions prior to starting a course.
Tetracycline is to be taken at least 1 hour before or 2 hours after eating, with a glass of water (approx 240ml), and do not lie down within 30 minutes of taking the drug.
If you are taking aluminium, calcium or magnesium based antacids, or bismuth, zinc, iron or sodium bicarbonate preparations, or calcium-enriched foods, such as milk, dairy products and juices, do not take Tetracycline with 3 hours or consuming these products.
Always complete a prescribed course to ensure maximum benefit. If you miss a dose of Tetracycline, take it as soon as you remember, unless this is close to your next scheduled dose. If it is, miss that dose and then return to your regular dosing schedule. Do not take 2 doses at once.
Tetracycline is to be stored between 68°F and 77°F (20-25°C), in its original container, away from heat, light and moisture. It must not be stored in the bathroom. Tetracycline may be stored briefly at temperatures between 59°F and 86°F (15-30°C). The product must be kept out of the reach of children and pets at all times. Any medication that is out of date should be disposed of safely (any pharmacist will be able to advise you on disposal instructions).
If you are allergic to any ingredients contained in Tetracycline or any other tetracycline antibiotics, such as Doxycycline, or you are taking either acitretin or methoxyflurane, do not take Tetracycline and consult your doctor as soon as possible.
Prior to using Tetracycline, advise your doctor or pharmacist of any medical conditions you may have, particularly if:
If you experience any of the above or following side effects, seek immediate emergency medical treatment and notify your doctor as soon as possible. Possible side effects include:
Do not share Tetracycline with anyone else. It is recommended that you always complete a prescribed course, under your doctor or medical practitioner’s supervision at all times.
Please note that the above list is not complete and other side effects may occur. Should any other side effects happen, consult your doctor as soon as possible.
